Unilever plans to introduce CBD infused deodorant products later this year with its brand Schmidt’s Naturals, according to a Bloomberg report. Unilever added Schmidt’s to its 400 strong brands in 2017.
With the federal law stating hemp derived CBD is now legal and can be used for the consumers, companies have taken over the market with constant production of new CBD based products.
People are curious to know about the much famous drug, CBD is known for its potential health benefits and has gained popularity ever since it was discovered that it can possibly help treat ailments such as stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders and many more.
It is a non-psychoactive component found in the hemp plant of cannabis genus which has anti-inflammatory properties. According to the law, CBD based products should contain less than 0.3% THC, tetrahydro cannabinoid which is also found in the plant but has adverse effects on human body.
Excess consumption of THC can cause mental disorders and damage the nervous system, which is why the bill has strictly restricted the concentration of THC in all the products. Before the products hit the shelves for consumers, they have to be mandatorily verified and checked for THC concentration.
The Food and Drug Administration allows CBD to be used only in a drug that can treat 2 rare forms of epilepsy in children. Otherwise, the FDA has strict rules against CBD being infused in edible products which has given an edge to beauty retailers and companies to lead the way.
With several companies launching their beauty products, Unilever too has jumped on the CBD bandwagon and is introducing a new line of CBD deodorant.
The CEO of Schmidt’s Naturals, Michael Cammarata told Bloomberg that “I believer CBD is probably the most powerful ingredient that we are going to see over the next decade in the personal care market.
Unilever has a strong hold in the personal care and beauty products industry along with cleaning agents, food and beverage domain. Schmidt’s operates independently but Cammarata said that the parent company, Unilever would“definitely part of the [decision-making] process” to market the CBD-infused products.
The report says that the new CBD infused deodorant will be sold in the beginning of September at Target. Cammarata indicated that the CBD infused deodorants will help fight odour and its anti-inflammatory properties will help soothe out the irritation from shaving.
Though Unilever did not comment on the report, it is estimated that if Schmidt’s deodorants are a success in the market, it is highly possible that the parent company would add CBD to its range of beauty and personal care brands.
Following last year’s legalization, many companies are expected to launch a full range of CBD products in the personal care products industry. Bigheads like CVS and Walgreens have already pushed CBD products to the store shelves in multiple states.
However, unless the FDA regulates the production and distribution of CBD infused food and beverages, retailers and shop owners remain confused about the subject. The agency has announced a public hearing in May regarding the regulatory issues on CBD infused products.
Once the air is cleared off, companies and shop owners can freely exploit the Farm bill which passed the law for making hemp-derived CBD legal. From curing diseases to rendering stress relieving effects, people can enjoy ample of benefits from CBD products.
