CBD has garnered the trust of many people, from patients suffering from anxiety, stress, depression to severe ailments like cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s, many have started relying on CBD for their health treatment.
CBD is an anti-inflammatory substance found in hemp plant, a cannabis genus plant. It is claimed to have several medical benefits; it soothes the mind, helps improve concentration, increases memory retention, speeds up recovery process and helps in maintaining good health.
A mother from Oregon has been accused of taking her unwell daughter out of the state to avoid conventional cancer treatment and instead opt for CBD oil and other natural naturopathic treatments.
It has been confirmed that Christina Dixon was taken into custody on early Thursday morning at Clackamas County Jail. The alleged faces two counts each of first-degree criminal mistreatment and first-degree custodial interference.
Her 13-year-old daughter, Kylee, has been battling with liver cancer and Dixon resorted to CBD oil instead of regular cancer medical treatments, owing to its health claims and popularity. According to sources, a doctor had recommended surgery and chemotherapy treatment for the young girl. As per doctors, they planned on removing at least one cancerous tumor from the girl’s liver.
But Dixon claims that her allegiance to natural treatment including CBD oil has proven efficient and effective on Kylee. She believed that the herbs, natural vitamins and pure CBD oil has been treating Kylee’s cancer and making her healthy again.
Authorities allege that Kylee and Dixon had left Oregon earlier in June to refrain from taking cancer treatment at the hospital. Their whereabouts were known a bit later by the authorities, and then they determined the reason they were in Nevada.
The duo was found at the Long Horn Casino & Hotel on June 13. Kylee was placed under protective custody soon after. In July, a judge from the Clackamas County Circuit ruled that state child welfare workers can make important medical decisions for Kylee. The court also issued a warrant against Dixon’s arrest, and without further ado, the woman turned herself in earlier this week.
During the court’s session in July, Kylee told the judge that she had agreed with her mother’s decision of going for an alternative treatment instead of a proper medical treatment. She further stated that she understood the risks, but went with her mother trusting the process.
Kylee’s attorney Rebecca Schaleger told the court that Kylee is not in favour of surgery and that she doesn’t believe if surgery would be as effective as her natural treatments.
However, a representative from Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) suggested that an alternative medicine should compliment the conventional medicine and not act as a replacement of it. The CASA advocate further went on to explain that without a proper treatment with surgery, the cancerous tumour will grow and cause illness, pain and eventually death.
Dixon has not yet entered a plea, but she has been released from the jail until August 19, her next hearing. Till then, her attorney has not commented on the situation. It is now a matter of crucial importance as there is a young girl’s life at stake.
If the CBD compound was indeed effective and the conventional treatment is going to slow down her recovery process, it would not only be hard for Dixon to face the consequences but also trigger a shockwave amongst the law enforcement officials.
Moreover, with the lack of evidence that supports medical benefits of CBD, it is difficult to allow Dixon to carry on with CBD oil and natural supplements treatment for her daughter. It isn’t an easy choice but it’s up to the court now – what they decide.
There are several research and studies that suggest that CBD has immense medical benefits. Many people worry if CBD causes any high or produces any hallucinations like when people smoke weed or pot, but in fact, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from cannabis genus plants.
The compound responsible for causing the high in users while smoking pot is THC or tetrahydro cannabinoid, another compound found in marijuana which has high psychoactive components.
According to the federal government of the United States, hemp-derived cannabidiol with a maximum of 0.3% THC per unit product is legal, but anything with higher levels of THC is considered as illegal. Companies have started flooding the consumer market with CBD products, ranging from CBD oil, topicals, cream, oil to beauty creams, ointments, lotions and what not.
But the Food and Drug Administration has not allowed CBD products legally. Till the time the agency does not create and implement a regulatory framework to monitor CBD products, consumers are advised not to rely on any advertisements of CBD that claim medical benefits.
