Rob Gronowski, a retired NFL player and the star of New England Patriots, has signed a deal with Abacus Health Products in Woonsocket, Rhode Island which entails buying a stake in the company and promoting its products.

Rob’s decision reflects his inclination towards CBD products that are made by the company under the brand CBDMEDIC which are widely known for their quick pain relief healing capabilities.

Gronkowski, commonly known as “Gronk” amongst his fans announced at a news conference that he has been using CBDMEDIC products for a while and he is pleasantly surprised by the product and how well it has worked. He said, “ I am pain-free, and that’s a big deal!”.

Cannabis and its Medical benefits

While many people have already tried CBD for its medicinal benefits, others still stigmatize the substance because of its association with marijuana. Cannabis has been there in the world for as long as history goes. It has been used traditionally in many countries like East Asia for treating life-threatening ailments. But it has only been a few decades that it garnered immense popularity amongst users.

CBD, a compound derived from the hemp plant – a cannabis genus plant – has known to treat mental health disorders such as anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia and control seizures in epilepsy.

It is also being used for reducing chronic pain, acute aches, inflammation, swelling, irritation, and life-threatening diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Though the research about medical benefits of CBD is limited, with the governments’ approval of legal medical cannabis, researchers are now looking into marijuana to derive its nutritional and medical benefits.

According to the U.S. federal law, hemp-derived CBD with a maximum concentration of 0.3% THC per unit is legal for production, processing, sales and consumption, anything above this level will be considered illegal. The Farm Bill in December 2018 that removed CBD from the list of Controlled Substances paved the way for companies and retailers to grab the market by creating revolutionary products using CBD.

Since then, CBD has been found in a variety of products – right from skin creams to face masks, CBD oil, tinctures, creams, gels, ointments, to even beer!

Gronkowski Injury History and CBD

Gronkowski retired at quite a young age from football in March 2019 (at 30). Both he and Andrew Luck, the quarterback from the Indianapolis Colts who decided to retire at the age of 29 in August, are viewed as eminent players of the NFL who are retiring early because of their injuries.

The former said that he needed to recover from his injuries and he wasn’t in a good shape until CBD came around. Football was bringing him down and it wasn’t keeping him healthy anymore. Gronkowski admitted that a series of his injuries led to his decision of early retirement while still being so young.

He also added that CBD could have helped in recovering faster from his injuries but the NFL has banned all marijuana-related products which prohibited his treatment using CBD.

The ban imposed by NFL extends to CBD as well, including the ones from the CBDMEDIC company which is now advocated by Gronkowski. These products are pure CBD oil and contain no traces of THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana which makes users ‘high’ when they smoke weed or pot.

Athletes Turning to CBD

When it comes to CBD, Gronkowski isn’t the only athlete who has vouched for it. He is in fact, the latest in a string of celebrities and athletes who swear by the medicinal benefits of CBD after trying it themselves.

The CBD industry has turned thousands if not millions of heads around and changed a largely followed perspective about drugs such as cannabis, making people see the difference between CBD and THC

Stars like Joe Montana have also invested in medical cannabis companies.

With the increasing trust and endorsement deals of CBD, the conservative NFL has also considered of removing its ban on the use of medical cannabis by athletes for recovery and pain management when they curate a new collective agreement for the new 2021 season.

Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi, a senior medical advisor for the brand Elevate CBD, said that this decision is partially influenced by ex-players such as Gronkowski. Khaleghi said Gronk’s testimony supporting medical cannabis usage is just another one in the rapidly growing list of elite athletes who have reported CBD to be useful in pain, stress management, inflammation and recovery.

Khaleghi finally added that CBD has shown anti-inflammatory properties which is one of the primary attractions for athletes who experience pain and have injuries.
