What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive substance found in hemp, a cannabis genus plant, which is allegedly good for health. It helps in alleviating the symptoms of severe diseases such as Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, Tourettes and even cancer.

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing acute ache, pain, inflammation, swelling, muscle rupture, fractures, and accident recovery. CBD has gained immense popularity, especially after the Farm Bill was passed in December 2018. The act legalized hemp production and cannabidiol for medicinal uses.

This led to a huge movement of business leaders, retailers, and consumers to invest in the CBD market. From CBD based oils to tincture, creams to foot cream, gummies to beer, CBD is now being used in plenty of different consumer products.

Despite the benefits of CBD, researchers and scientists have shown concerns regarding the after-effects and long term impact of CBD. There is little research to back up the claims made by companies that market CBD products as a cure to cancer and other diseases.

Is CBD legal?

CBD was legalized in December 2018 by the U.S. government with a maximum concentration limit of 0.03% THC per unit. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive component found in cannabis. It is responsible for causing the “high” that people get while smoking a joint or weed.

Looking at the ill-effects of THC, the government kept stringent limits on its concentration in CBD products. However, the Food and Drug Administration has not yet created a regulatory framework that clearly defines the legal limit on the concentrations of CBD products. The FDA has warned several companies for marketing their products as a go-to healthy alternative for diseases.

The agency had organized a public meeting on May 31 with stakeholders, business leaders, consumers, researchers, scientists, and others to discuss CBD products. The consumer market is flooded with products that are not regulated and might contain high levels of THC. The FDA has warned consumers to be aware of such CBD products and take necessary precautions to ensure they do not invest in illegal products.
