CBD Oil While Breast Feeding

Cannabis isn’t widely accepted for consumption during breastfeeding or pregnancy. Research indicates that THC or tetrahydro cannabinoid, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis can transfer to breast milk and may hinder the development of the baby.

Additionally, according to Pediatrics cannabis use during pregnancy can negatively affect uterine blood flow.

But what about CBD? Does it affect pregnant women the same way cannabis does?

The truth is, despite falling in the same genus, CBD derived from the hemp plant is quite different from marijuana and has a different impact on the human body. For starters, cannabidiol contains less than 0.3% THC, which means the user will not experience a high.

Limited Research

The foremost important thing to establish is the use of CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully researched yet. The existing science about cannabis use during breastfeeding and pregnancy is largely concerned with cannabis-derived products. The general notion says that marijuana use can be typically dangerous for pregnant women, and without more research about CBD, it isn’t worth taking the risk.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the use of CBD during pregnancy is also dangerous, it simply means that this area of CBD is unknown and yet to be discovered. It is only because of this that doctors do not recommend CBD to pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, if a pregnant woman suffers from mental health issues like stress, depression, insomnia, headaches, she must consult with a physician before taking CBD in any form.

Potential Uses of CBD During and After Pregnancy

Although there is no official word on the safety of pregnant and breastfeeding women for CBD usage, several women have reported that CBD has improved their experience because CBD has the ability to address certain symptoms that are specific to pregnancy.

Nausea is extremely common during pregnancy and it can become quite debilitating for some. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a severe condition which is characterized by consistent vomiting and nausea that can be so severe that mothers often become dehydrated or struggle to maintain a healthy weight. For some women who suffer from this condition, CBD can benefit them by decreasing nausea and vomiting.

It is found that as many as 94% of pregnant women suffer from major sleep issues, with the most severe being consistent insomnia. Adequate rest and a good night’s sleep is vital to maternal mental health. To improve their sleeping patterns and reducing stress, many pregnant women turn to CBD which has been linked to improving sleep quality and treating mental health issues.

It is also estimated that around 8.5% – 10.5% of pregnant women and 4.4%-10.8% women in their postpartum period experience anxiety disorders. While there is space for more research to be done to properly examine the effects of CBD, preliminary animal studies suggest that CBD may be effective in reducing the signs of anxiety in women.

Using CBD While Pregnant or Breastfeeding

As noted by “What to expect”, it is difficult to check if CBD use is safe and healthy for pregnant and breastfeeding women as research is largely focused on cannabis and THC, and the effect of THC on fetal development and infant development while breastfeeding.

However, there are many mothers who have admitted to using CBD during their pregnancy. The ideal way to understand if cannabis use is safe for you is to weigh your options and consult with your healthcare provider.
