A start-up company in Bridgeport plans to improve the lives of pet owners and their best friends by offering hemp-based pet products. Happy Paws CBD Treats creates flavourful, all-natural snacks infused with CBD (cannabidiol), a compound derived from industrial hemp which is known to have significant health benefits.

Lee Arco, owner of the company says that his team started working on pet-focused CBD products almost an year ago. He said they have a separate company with a formal license to grow industrial hemp. Instead of selling CBD directly to the consumers, they thought of doing something unique with the drug and expand its target audience. Also, they have around 5 to 6 dogs to themselves which prompted the idea of creating CBD pet products that could benefit pets the same way it does to humans.

Happy Paws CBD Treats uses a special blend of oils to amplify the intended benefits of the products, Acrosaid. He said most of the products available in the market use MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil which is basically just a downgraded version of hemp oil. However, his company uses a full-spectrum oil blend which consists not just hemp oil but coconut oil as well which is more beneficial.

According to the website of the company, CBD is a non-psychoactive and anti-inflammatory product which can be beneficial for a wide variety of physiological functions, such as anxiety, panic attacks, seizures, appetite, digestion, fatigue, inflammation, and mood. Cannabidiol also contains antioxidants and fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory effects.

Acro said that many CBD companies use imported oils or deal with third party vendors for their oil demands but Happy Paws’ products are made from their own hemp which is grown at one of the company’s farms in Harrison County.

The company currently sells only one flavor of peanut butter, pet snacks. It plans to expand its menu and create more different flavors of the products.

“We have pumpkin flavoring in the works — that should be coming here in the next month or two,” he said. “Then we are working on a meat flavoring and are working on a honey-flavored dog treat.”

They sell their products via their online website as of now, but Arco said they have plans to open up physical stores for reaching out to their customers directly in the Bridgeport area.

“In the next six months, we’d like to open a brick-and-mortar store where you can come in to discuss the product, purchase the product and bring in your pets.”

They are working with local Humane Societies and are continually working towards a better future for pets. They donate one bag to a local animal shelter for every 10 bags of treats the company sells.

Anu Hookano, the manager of Happy Paws’ said that the team sees CBD based pet products serve a two in one purpose – gets good business value and is a great way to improve quality of life for pets.

He has seen a number of benefits in his own pets after treating them with the company’s products. He said he gave the product to a black Labrador dog who tends to have anxiety issues, and it worked wonders on it. Just a treat or two were sufficient enough to calm him down and make him feel relaxed. Another dog that Anu has is a huge mastiff who suffers from hip issues, so muscle discomfort is a huge problem for her. After taking the CBD infused treats, she walks better and jogs more leisurely without suffering much pain.

Although there are many companies entering into the CBD space with new products every day now, Arco says that Happy Paws’ has a ‘leg up’ on the competition.
