A lot of people across the world suffer from sleep disorders, some as severe as insomnia or sleep apnea. This is especially true to Americans living a stressful life, owing mostly to strained relationships and demanding work environment.
While conventional medicines usually offer only partial relief, most of them also come with a battery of severe side effects that make it difficult to live with.
On the other hand, CBD has been proven to be comparatively safer and more effective on people suffering from sleep disorders, especially when a full-spectrum hemp extract is used in making the CBD oil or product.
Besides, CBD’s antidepressant and anxiolytic properties have been well-documented and established over the past several years’ of studies and experimentation.
For people living with anxiety issues, sleep disorders are obvious fallouts. Naturally, one can expect to sleep better at night when they have effectively overcome their depression and anxiety issues.
But the question most people ask is – “Which brand of CBD oil is best and safest for sleep issues?”
So here’s our take on it…

Best CBD Oils For Sleep: How We Made The List
At “The Cannabis Radar”, we want to make sure we do right by our readers. And hence, we not only asked around for people’s opinions or studied product reviews, but we also went a step further.
A couple of our employees who used to suffer from different forms of sleep disorders to volunteer for physical testing of the different brands of CBD oils.
While we don’t claim that our list is exhaustive, we can confidently stand by our list of “Best CBD Oils for Sleep” as over 5,000 subscribers and readers have vouched for them, with a total of 2,670 users choosingFabCBD’s full-spectrum CBD oil as their favorite for fighting sleep issues.
To create this list, we reached out to over 9,000 email subscribers and readers and reviewed a multitude of user reviews posted on different product websites and blogs. While 5,000 people responded to our survey, the product reviews shed a substantial amount of light on how the brands are viewed by users in general, which again led to the creation of a list of 50 shortlisted brands that our testers tried out to come up with the “5 Top CBD Oils for Sleep”.
In our review, we have also taken the price of each product under consideration to make sure our readers get the best value for their money.
Factors we looked at to judge each CBD oil product
We have set some general parameters that we believe should factor in any user’s choice of CBD oils while surfing brands online or at offline stores.
- Potency: When it comes to sleep disorders, CBD needs to be very potent. Although with CBD, it usually follows “a little goes a long way” rule, with sleep disorders, one needs high concentrations of CBD, especially of the full-spectrum variety, to be effective. However, one must keep in mind that these full-spectrum CBD oils are extracted from hemp and are different from medical marijuana that, as the name suggests, is extracted from marijuana – a completely different strain of cannabis that contains very high levels of a psychoactive component, known as delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). That is not the case with hemp extracts that essentially contain less than 0.3% THC. However, the little THC, along with the other cannabinoids and terpenes offer a holistic impact, known in scientific parlance as the entourage effect.
- Product ingredients: To be on the safe side, we looked at the ingredients of the CBD oils, including the carrier oils, essential oils, terpenes, flavonoids, and other substances, to find out if…
- They are well suited for sleep disorders
- They are extracted from natural sources
- The ingredients were grown organically
- They enhance CBD’s effectiveness
- They don’t include harmful chemicals, like contaminants or psychoactive substances
- Hemp cultivation: The source of the hemp extract is crucial to determining the safety profile of a CBD product. Hemp cultivated in regulated farmlands across the US and some parts of Europe is safe, as they are less likely to contain bad chemicals or high levels of THC.
- Extract type: CBD oils are broadly derived from three types of blends – full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolates. Selecting the right type of extract is completely a personal choice, but full-spectrum extracts have been found to be most effective in combatting sleep disorders. However, for those who are afraid of failing a drug test should opt for broad-spectrum. Isolates are usually the least effective for sleep issues.
- Lab tests: CBD products, which been subjected to testing by third-party or independent laboratories, are better for consumption, as these labs can testify for their authenticity, potency, efficiency, quality, and safety. We have chosen brands that have made their CoAs public.
- Guarantees: It’s natural human psychology to trust brands that exhibit confidence in their products through “100% satisfaction guaranteed” and “full refund guarantee”. Discounts definitely help, as most quality CBD products are expensive. Nonetheless, we trust only those brands that promise only the best quality and assure customers to return their money if you don’t get the best of it.
- Price: While it is true that high-quality CBD oils are expensive, not all costly ones are actually of good quality. The trick is to find out which brand is really true to their word. That’s why we trust only those that have got honest good reviews and have been tested to be of good quality by our testers.
- Brand reputation: Although brand reputation doesn’t always reflect its quality, it does, however, play a part in cultivating trust. Image of established brands is usually indicative of years of successful business and experimentation to formulate their proprietary blend.
- Personal experience: TCR’s testers have personally played a role in creating this list by testing the different brands of CBD oils to verify our overall findings.

The best potency strengths for sleep disorders:
1200mg – $99 ($0.08/mg)
2400mg – $129 ($0.05/mg)
Our testers, both of whom suffer from insomnia, tried out the different brands of CBD oils, each after an interval of a week of no CBD product.
One of our testers had undergone a traumatic incident earlier on in his teenage years, while the other tester is a middle-aged woman who started suffering from insomnia due to other physical and mental stress later on in her life.
Interestingly, both of them seemed to respond pretty well to FabCBD’s CBD drops. They both expressed their satisfaction after the very first night. They both used the 2400mg variant.
While the first tester had never used CBD product in his life and was glad he did, the second tester had used a few but was never able to find the kind of result she achieved with this particular product.
Fortunately, they had both tried this brand after having tried all others, as this was comparatively a new brand and a small family-run company. Nonetheless, they found this CBD oil to be the most effective among all others available in the market.
From the very first morning after its use, they looked fresh and well-rested, energetic and high-spirited. Both the testers and their colleagues felt a sharp improvement as they went about their daily chores and duties at the office.
A good night’s sleep ensured they were able to give more to their work than they could in the past. Besides, they felt no side effects during the week they used it, despite the heavy concentration of CBD, proving that CBD is not only effective in ensuring a good night’s sleep but is also pretty safe for human consumption.
cbdMD as a Brand
cbdMD is one of those brands that offer safe and quality CBD products at affordable prices, even while sticking to the established federal regulations as well as maintaining adequate transparency in their business.
They also provide a substantial amount of information regarding the industry on their brand’s blog page.
cbdMD CBD oil – Highest Potency Variants for Sleep Issues& Special Sleep Aid Variant
Variants 1500mg, 3000mg, 5000mg, 7500mg are best suited for sleep issues. They also have a sleep aid variant (500mg). Our testers found the 5000mg and 7500mg variants to be most effective, as their CBD oils don’t contain other cannabinoids or terpenes for a more enhanced effect like full-spectrum variants do. Note: They have two lower strengths, but sleep difficulties require stronger doses.

Isolated CBD mixed in carrier oils
|1.||6 potent CBD strengths of tinctures + Sleep Aid CBD PM, with vegan, organic, and gluten-free ingredients; maintains good seed-to-shelf quality control; extracts sourced from 100% organic, non-GMO hemp grown in Kentucky||Their website is difficult to navigate, with little information on the brand, their customer service hours, or the founders; no domestic address. CoAs are also difficult to find and doesn’t specify which product it’s testifying to.|
|2.||Thorough lab test reports, citing cannabinoid profile, safety profile, including tests for pesticides, microbes, and solvents.||Users with coconut allergies will face problems as their carrier oil is derived from coconut oil.|
|3.||Affordable pricing; among the cheaper options in CBD oils in the market||Only available online|
|4.||Free shipping across the US, also some presence in Europe; 30-day money-back guarantee||Delayed shipping|
Price: For the variants checked:
5000mg: $239.99 [$0.05/mg]
7500mg: $339.99: [$0.05/mg]
Given that these are essentially CBD isolates, even though they claim their CBD oils are hybrid broad-spectrum, it is only the cannabidiol that acts on your body. Hence, you can’t expect to see the same kind of effect as that of full-spectrum CBD oils that are needed for sleep.
Nevertheless, the higher variants of their CBD oils are quite potent to have the same effect, without pinching your pocket as most high-concentration high-quality CBD oils do.
So, it’s no wonder when our testers felt that both the 5000mg and 7500mg were good options for overcoming their insomnia. [The younger male tester who is new to CBD tried out the 5000mg, the older female tester tried the higher variant.]
They both felt good about this product. They could detect a substantial improvement in their sleep pattern after its use from the second night onwards.
While the effect was satisfactory on the very first night, the effects of the second night were especially more solid.
This is because the product’s effects seemed to wear off after 5 hours on the first night for one of the testers. However, the individual felt the little sleep that he DID get was good in a very long time, which is a substantial improvement over his previous condition.
As for the other tester, she felt the effects took a while to kick in and was not effective enough – she did wake up a few times, anxious and sweating.
However, the second time did the trick for both of them. They had a calmer, peaceful, and dreamless sleep, without waking up intermittently or before 8 hours of complete sleep.
They glided through the day without any anxiety, tiredness or irritation. Their performance at work was good and their family members were also satisfied with their overall behavior and spirit. They were able to take on stressful work without any eventuality, and personally felt they were fit to take on bigger responsibilities both at work and at home.
Joy Organics as a Brand
Joy Organics’ broad-spectrum CBD oil tinctures, sourced from regulated hemp farmlands, are gluten-free and devoid of harmful contaminants.
They take pride in the high quality of their products and the transparency of their operations.
Their products aren’t too expensive but have failed to provide sleep disorder patients with sufficiently high CBD strengths. They only have one option – 1500mg – for sleep issues.
Their flavors are all-natural, derived from terpenes and essential oils.

Broad-spectrum CBD blend
Pros & Cons:
|1.||High quality organic & lab-tested products||Joy Organics gives the impression it produces its products, but it really does not. The products are made by Folium Biosciences. They also claim to source their hemp from the US, but we’re not sure from where.|
|2.||THC-free||Small amounts of THC can be good in certain cases, especially for sleep disorders|
|3.||Value for money||Unaffordable for some|
|4.||Good flavor range||Purpose of posting lab test reports conducted by their own chemists in unclear; detailed reports are available only on buying their products.|
1500mg – $134.95 ($0.14/mg)
Joy Organics was true to its word about being fast-acting. Besides, its broad-spectrum blend offered the entourage effect. However, given that its strength wasn’t high enough it tended to wear off initially.
Both our testers experienced short-lasting effects during the first few nights. Although the sleep that they got was solid, the effects lasted for only about 4- 5 hours for the first 3 – 4 nights.
After the initial hiccup, the following nights offered peaceful and lasting sleep, allowing them to wake up sharp and fresh in the morning.
During the first few days, they started getting edgy and irritated during the evenings due to less sleep, knowing that they should be able to get good sleep with CBD. But this phase soon passed, and a remarkable change was noticed in their behavior and performance.
There were no side effects and their co-workers felt the product worked, and so did they!
CBDistillery as a Brand
CBDistillery does offer a range of both full-spectrum and isolate CBD oils in a variety of potencies, ranging from 250mg to 5000mg. All their products are lab-tested. Their 2500mg and 5000mg CBD options are good for fighting sleep disorders.
There have been some complaints about their potency levels, even though they have high CBD concentrations. Our testers too had similar complaints. They felt unsure about the actual concentration of the product. They both tried out the 5000mg variants.
Besides, there is no clear information on their farming, extraction, and processing practices. Nonetheless, their products are safe and of good quality, given that they are certified by the US Hemp Authority.
CBDistillery– an established brand of CBD oils
5000mg for sleep
- Fractionated coconut oil (MCTs)
- Hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD
Lab reports by Botanacor Services are made available on their product pages. To get a detailed CoA, however, you need to buy a product and scan the QR code on the label.
No money-back guarantee on opened products. The brand offers 7days to request return and refund on sealed products only for:
- wrong products being delivered
- damaged or partially filled products
- delivery issues
Pros and Cons:
|1.||A large variety of options for sleep disorders [1000mg – 5000mg]||No ‘money-back’ guarantee when not satisfied with the product; only 7-day period for return of sealed products|
|2.||Available both online and in retail stores||Packaging and droppers are flimsy, creates problems with use and possible wastage|
|3.||Transparent business practices – farming, ingredients, extraction, third-party lab testing, etc.||Regular shipping delays, especially during the holidays; many users had complaints about their customer service; Lab test reports available on their product don’t include safety profiles (pesticides, etc.)|
|4.||Budget-friendly for all users; free shipping for orders above $75 across the US.||Some people have complained of the poor effectiveness of even the high-potency variants.|
|5.||CBD extracts sourced from non-GMO & pesticide-free hemp||Not 100% organic.|
From the little information we found on the extraction process, we found they use the inferior ethanol extraction process instead of the preferred CO2 method, leaving behind harmful residues.
|6.||Offers special discounts for war veterans, military personnel, and the disabled||No flavored options are available. Only one flavor – natural, almost odorless; MCT oil may pose problems for people with coconut allergies|
5000mg – $240 [$0.05/mg]
Our testers found the product effective enough, but not completely satisfactory. The reasons for that are:
- They did not have the expected effect for a 5000mg concentration – smooth transition into a state of sleep.
- Effects wore off after a few hours for the first 5 – 6 days, without the individuals being able to complete 8 hours of sleep, usually with residual angst or depression.
- Some unwanted effects started showing initially, like a drunken-like state, possibly due to trace amounts of ethanol. The grogginess persisted through the day, making them irritated.
Note: These side effects soon wore off after 5 – 6 days and the initial hiccups too faded and the two individuals were able to get a good night’s sleep from Day 7.
We know that CBD’s effects vary from person to person. It so happens that the different formulations also have different effects, especially when they are made from full-spectrum extracts. It all boils down to the kind of cannabis strain used, whether they were organically produced or not, and how they were extracted. These play an important role.
While ethanol may have varying effects of different intensity on people, we must understand that any alcoholic substance, mixed with cannabis extracts, can’t be a good thing. Nonetheless, most people often overcome its effect pretty fast.
Note: There has been no indication that butane (sometimes used by certain brands to extract CBD from hemp) had been used in its extraction. Any residual amounts of butane may cause more severe and comparatively harmful effects, like nausea, vomiting, headache, suffocation, and/or convulsion.
NuLeaf Naturals as Brand
Being one of the most trusted and established American hemp brands, NuLeaf Naturals’ products contain only all-natural, lab-tested, organic CBD extracts.
Their full-spectrum blend of CBD oils is packed with cannabinoids, terpenes, essential oils, and other plant nutrients – all of which are extracted with the CO2 method and certain advanced engineering processes. Their products contain no additives or preservatives.
NuLeaf Naturals–Focussed on only Full-Spectrum CBD oils
Potency: NuLeaf sells approximately the same concentration of CBD (48.3 – 48.5 mg/ml) in different bottle sizes. So we selected the 30ml variant, containing 1450mg, for two reasons:
- We wouldn’t use a product for our tests for more than a month
- Most other brands sell CBD oils in 30ml bottles
- Full-spectrum hemp blend
- Organic hemp oil
Third-party lab ProVerde Laboratories tested their products, the results of which are available on each product page and their FAQ page.
30-day money-back guarantee only on new and sealed products.
Full-spectrum CBD extracts
Pros & Cons:
|1.||Products sourced from 100% non-GMO whole-plant extracts; contain vitamins, trace minerals, and omega fats from hemp||No money-back guarantee on tested products|
|2.||Both online or offline stores||No options in potency|
|3.||No additives||No options in flavors.|
|4.||Ships abroad to over 40 countries||NuLeaf sells only CBD oils, no other CBD products.|
|5.||Highly improved CO2 extraction method employed||Expensive for most|
1450mg – $179 ($0.12/mg)
Being a reputed brand, we perhaps expected a lot better effect. Even though the effects were slow on the uptake, they were certainly good.
However, our testers felt they needed a higher strength of their CBD blend to have sufficient effect. The effects were minimal for the first few days. But with time (around 5 days), their formulation started working better. It could be because of the CBD is in their system for a prolonged period.
However, with time one of our testers didn’t want to continue with this product. He felt uneasy in the stomach. It’s possible that the formulation was not to blame, but the tester certainly felt so. So we didn’t insist on him continuing with it.
As for the other user, who was much more accustomed to different kinds of CBD products, the effects took about 4 – 5 days to give her proper 8 hours’ sleep and did not have any side effects, at all.
Given the fact that their extraction method is good, side effects are pretty rare.
However, they both wished the brand came up with higher concentrations of CBD oils since they only deal with CBD oils.
What’s the CBD dosage for sleep?
For sleep disorders, a higher dose of full-spectrum CBD blend is usually advised. This is because sleep issues, like pain and inflammation, need higher and more concentrated CBD formulation, enhanced by the effects of other cannabinoids and terpenes. Besides, lower doses will make you feel energized and keep you awake, instead of putting you to sleep.
However, CBD dosing is not an exact science. It varies from person to person, even for different ailments for the same person. The general parameters that determine how much you should take per day depends on:
- Condition being treated
- Individual body chemistry (refer: endocannabinoid system)
- Concentration of CBD
- Particular CBD blend (especially when it is a full-spectrum formulation)
Unless and until you’ve tried CBD before, it is best to start with a small dose, maybe the second-lowest variant available in a brand (for sleep disorder), before moving on to higher strengths.
What effects does CBD oil have on sleep?
CBD is essentially biphasic in nature. It affects sleep patterns in two ways:
- In lower doses, it keeps you awake and alert
- In high doses, it makes you feel sleepy and offers a good night’s sleep
Nonetheless, there are definitive research studies on its effectiveness on insomnia.
Pharma vs CBD for sleep therapy
CBD has not only been proven to be more effective at promoting sleep, with fewer side effects, than THC, it has also been found to be more effective than pharmaceutical drugs, like SSRIs, Ambien, and benzodiazepines, as it does not change the normal sleep-wake pattern or make you groggy through the day.
Is it legal to purchase CBD oil for sleep?
When it comes to legality, it does not matter if you need it for insomnia or pain, inflammation or to feel energized. The only thing that matters is your location – your place of residence. All you need to do is to check for the legality of CBD in your particular area.
CBD oil is legal in all 50 states of the US, unless and until it is medical marijuana you need. In that case, you may need to get a medical marijuana card, depending on which state you live in.
So, if you’re looking to fight your sleep disorder with CBD oil, you need not worry! You can order online or buy from reliable offline stores across the country, as long as you’re buying from a good brand that has a good CBD oil formulation.
That’s when our list of “Best CBD oils for Sleep” will come in handy! We wish you the very best in overcoming your sleep issues as soon as possible.
