Golffers Prefers CBD oil

When Scott McCarron returned to his locker at the 2018 Boca Raton Invitational after a round, Functional Remedies EndoSport had placed a bottle of CBD oil pills in the cubby. McCarron is a popular gold player and it isn’t surprising for professional players to receive sample products that they are supposed to review. But this particular product spurred quite a story for McCarron, the No.1  ranked player on the PGA Championship tour.

Back then, McCarron just knew the outline of CBD oil, his conversations with other athletes and research had him acquainted with the product but he didn’t know the ins and outs of it completely. When McCarron first started using CBD oil, he kept a close watch on how it affected his body and mind. In about two weeks, he measured his sleep using a device known as WHOOP. It is a sleep and strain device that is used by Major League Baseball, NFL and Olympic athletes to measure the quality of their sleep.

Tom VanHaaren at ESPN told that For the first time in about 2 years that he had been wearing the device, he noticed a green on the device for 7 days straight after he first started taking CBD oil on Monday. The colour indicated that he had a fantastic and peaceful sleep without any strain.

Fast forward to two years, McCarron is now a regular user  of CBD oil who uses it for various reasons, including sleep, anxiety, inflammation and recovery. Though intensive research and studies are being conducted to verify the high praises that CBD is continually receiving, many players in the Champions Tour have started using it on a regular basis.

What once used to be a taboo topic with a stigma attached to it, is now a product that many players are happily using on the Tour. The cannabinoid industry has grown by multiple folds over the last 1 year, now diving into sponsorships, ambassador programs with high-profile players from both tours, including McCarron, David Toms, Vaughn taylor, Bubba Watson, Kenny Perry, Tom Kite, Scott Piercy, DJ Trahan and many others.

One of the main reasons why CBD oil has gained such immense popularity in the Champions Tour is because the players are older, with rapidly changing bodies, and are seeking out for safe remedies that can help them continue in competing at a high level, keeping pace with their stringent schedules.

A major reason as to why senior players are more open to discussing about CBD and embracing such products is that they are not drug-tested in the same way as the under-50 crowd on the PGA Tour.

Scientifically, CBD is derived from the hemp plant, a cannabis genus plant, with anti-inflammatory and non-psychoactive properties. It is known to treat a wide spectrum of diseases, especially associated with mental health and inflammation. It can be used to reduce pain, swelling, inflammation, irritation, anxiety, depression, insomnia and even treat a series of severe ailments including cancer, Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

The FDA allows only one CBD based drug, Epidiolex which is used to treat two rare forms of epilepsy in children. Apart from this, the agency is yet to set a regulatory framework for CBD based products, especially edibles.

The federal government legalized hemp derived CBD with a maximum concentration of 0.3% of THC per unit. THC or tetrahydro cannabinoid is another compound found in hemp plants that has psychoactive properties. It is this compound which makes people feel “high” when smoking marijuana or pot.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has THC under the list of banned substances, and given that CBD products are not regulated by the FDA, there is a level of uncertainty about what is actually present in the product and in what concentration. It raises concerns about whether the THC levels are low enough to keep the Tour players from failing a drug test and if the listed ingredients are actually what make up the CBD oil.

McCarron said that everybody was just waiting to see what CBD could do, from a legal and medical point of view. To the credit of  the Tour, they have put out a statement that though it is not illegal to use CBD or its products, it is the user’s responsibility to be aware of what ingredients are used in making these products.

With the abundance of CBD products flourishing the market right now, it is difficult to assimilate and identify all the ingredients present in them. Nonetheless, the FDA seems to be working on creating regulatory measures to evaluate the nature of these products. Till then, the consumers and retailers will stay put in a grey area where the federal government has legalized CBD but there is no guarantee on the safety and purity of these products.
