Balanced Health Botanicals receives self-affirmed GRAS status

Balanced Health Botanicals (BHB), the parent company of the fast-growing brand CBDistillery recently announced that the company’s hemp-derived full-spectrum CBD extract and isolate has got self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status. It is in accordance with the stringent safety guidelines by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The GRAS process entails an exhaustive review of food ingredients by independent toxicological experts in the industry to ensure that the food additives are safe to consume.

BHB follows various protocols and procedures to garner the trust of their customers and ensure their products are of premium quality and safe to use. Over the course of one year, they have collaborated with academic experts to create GRAS dossiers that were submitted then to a third-party panel of toxicologists to examine and determine the safety of their full-spectrum CBD extract and CBD isolate, and thus attaining the status of self-affirmed GRAS.

Chase Terwilliger, CEO of Balanced Health Botanicals said that as the leaders of the #CBDMOVEMENT, their first and foremost priority is consumer safety and the self-affirmed GRAS certification is a pivotal move for both BHB and the rapidly growing CBD industry.

Terwilliger further added that they are committed to providing safe and high-quality products, and they believe their customers deserve nothing less. The self-affirmed GRAS status is added to their list of industry-leading safety protocols.

All CBD companies should take the right steps to ensure consumer safety and should go through the GRAS process for their extracts.

As for Balanced Health Botanicals, it owns and operates some of the biggest brands in the hemp-derived CBD industry. It entails the widely popular CBDistillery, the flagship brand of BHB, and BOTA, luxurious plant-powered, hemp-derived CBD supplements and skincare products. Additionally, it also owns CBDistilleryRx, an exclusive line of broad-spectrum hemp-derived CBD products to help improve overall health and wellness.

FDA’s Stance on CBD Products

According to the Farm Bill in December 2018, hemp was legalized for recreational purposes with a maximum threshold of 0.3% THC per unit. THC or tetrahydro cannabidiol is a psychoactive substance found in marijuana plants, which produces a euphoria-like feeling and hallucinations that can affect your mental health.

Contrarily, CBD is an anti-inflammatory and non-psychoactive substance which is used in alleviating the symptoms of many diseases such as cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Tourettes, and mental health disorders.

CBD is also popular in treating acute pain, aches, inflammation, stress, insomnia, depression, anxiety, muscle injury, rupture, fractures, joint pains, ligament pain, etc. While there is research that supports the medicinal claims of CBD and its effectiveness, the FDA is yet to permit it for regular use.

The only CBD based medicine approved by the FDA so far is Epidiolex, an oral solution, which is used for treating two rare and severe forms of epilepsy- Dravet syndrome and Lennox Gastaut syndrome. Despite the lack of clarity on the legality of CBD products for medicinal benefits, companies continue to hop on the CBD bandwagon offering a line of CBD products.

The FDA has started issuing warning letters to CBD brands that promote their products as an alternative to licensed medication or with medicinal claims. Curaleaf and Rooted Apothecary are some of the leading CBD brands that were warned by the FDA about their array of CBD products.

The agency had organized a public meeting back in May this year, however, there hasn’t been any concrete decision regarding CBD products. The FDA is yet to create a regulatory framework that could be looked up to while promoting, selling or consuming CBD based products.
